That completely spoke to me. Well said. Absolutely agree. I never do a character the same way. I'm definitely a character actor, not a personality actor. Each character is treated like a separate entity & individual. However, people always tell me that even though the character is different than me, they believe me in whatever I do. Even though I'm playing a part, I feel more me on stage & in front of a camera.
I'd agree from the standpoint that those not so aware and not so confident about who they are are then predisposed to judging a character they're portraying. For instance the comment, "well, I could never be such and such or do such and such" arises in someone whose self judgements keep them locked into such negative and restrictive self images and they then can't imagine going beyond such images.
That's the journey of the actor. Rigorous self-research. Living passionately, experiencing fully, embracing life and relationships and traumas and personal history and life objectives and vulnerabilities. Knowing your CORE SHAME and your JOY. Surrounding yourself with honest friends. Defining your integrity. Making mistakes and trying new things. Listening to your authenticity. Good, wise question. Because most people probably assume they know themselves.
